How to combat Anxiety

As a follower of Jesus, I draw strength from the Bible, and in the book of Mark 12, verse 30 we are given the greatest commandment. It says:

To love our families and neighbors well, we must care for our hearts, souls, minds, and physical bodies. I made this worksheet based on this scripture. There are 4 jars labeled heart, soul, mind, and strength. These represent how we are caring for our emotional health (heart), our spiritual health (soul), our mental or intellectual health (mind), and our physical health (strength). Another worksheet is included to give you some beginning ideas on how to fill each jar.

You will make a care plan for when anxiety starts to rise. Start by writing two or three activities for each jar. Maybe for the heart, I’ll put journaling and talking with a friend two times a week. Soul, I’ll put prayer and scripture reading daily, read a book at night and take a class, and for strength, I'll walk my dog or take a jog. Then over the next few days, try to prioritize doing these things. Make a mental note of how each thing makes you feel. Also, see if any of them fill multiple jars. For example, if I take a walk with my dog on a beautiful day and use that time to pray, that one activity has contributed to my heart, soul, and strength all at once.

Print out the worksheet and hang it up where you can easily see it. Pay attention to how you maintain your jars and what part of your overall person needs that investment. Having this mapped out will help you know what you can do to soothe that stress response.
